Oriental carpet care
A handmade Oriental carpet is a purchase for a lifetime and should be cared for to maintain its appeal. Cleaning should be done every 1 to 3 years and should be carried out by a professional. Besides regularly rotating your rug to evenly wear it out every 6 months to 2 years, below are some tips on how to best protect your carpets as well as what to do in case of an accidental spill.
Threat: Long exposure to light (weakens fiber, fades colors).
Solution: Neutralize light with ultra-violet radiation filters. Maintain luminosity at no higher than 50 lux.
Threat: Variable humidity (undermines tautness of warp and weft; dryness causes brittle fibers, excess humidity causes swelling and vulnerability to bacteria).
Solution: Maintain humidity between 45 and 60 percent (can be measured using a hygrometer). Use either an air conditioner (when air is humid) or a humidifier (when air is too dry).
Threat: Insects, larvae, micro-organisms (fungus).
Solution: Regular inspections, vacuum cleaning, preventive treatment with pesticide, by bath, or fumigation.
Threat: Atmospheric pollutants such as anhydride sulfate (SO2) and ozone (O3).
Solution: An air-conditioning system with proper filters and frequent vacuum cleaning.

1. Blot. Do not rub the stain in, use a paper towel to soak up what you can. If it’s a solid (except for latex paint), then scrape with the dull end of a knife or use a spoon.
2. Water, soap, white vinegar. Apply tepid tap water mixed with mild dish-washing soap mixed with white vinegar on to a wash cloth (not directly on the spill). Go with small quantities at a time and then rinse thoroughly. Do not over wet and avoid wetting back of carpet.
3. Dry. Use a towel with a heavy object on top of it to sit and collect the moisture out from the carpet. Let the carpet air dry or use a fan.
